Marie Hall Ets (1895 - 1984)

Award winning American author and illustrator. Born in Milwaukee in 1895. She studied art, but then worked  for a time as a social worker. After a long illness, she decided to use her art skills. She soon became successful as an illustrator of children's picture books, both her own and those of other authors. She won The Caldecott Medal for her artwork in Nine Days to Christmas in 1960, five of her other works were Caldecott Honor Books and she also won the Hans Christian Anderson Award in 1956.

Many of her stories feature animals and the
Mister Penny series, also included a horse called Limpy. These are picture books for younger readers.

SUMMARY:  Mister Penny's horse Limpy decides he wants to become a racehorse and recruits Splop the goat to help him.

3) MISTER PENNY'S CIRCUS

ILLUSTRATED BY THE AUTHOR
SUMMARY: A bear and chimp from the circus come to live with Mister Penny and decide to teach all his animals, including Limpy the horse, to do circus tricks.

Collector's Info:
All can be found in the USA, although Mister Penny's Racehorse is much rarer than the other two and can be a bit more expensive. All three are quite hard to find elsewhere.
